Even if you don’t work in the technology industry, it’s likely that you still hear news about it from time to time. From software updates to new hardware or maybe even some interesting research findings, there are many reasons why everyone should know what’s going on in the IT world. To help you stay up-to-date, here are five reasons why you should be reading IT news every day.
1) Learn something new
Keep up to date with everything happening in your industry. Being knowledgeable can impress co-workers, and clients and help you land a promotion or new job. There is never a dull moment in tech, and even if you aren’t interested in being on top of every breakthrough, you should at least be aware of what is going on so that you don’t look out of touch when discussions arise at work. The best way to keep tabs on technology news is by subscribing to online newsletters, magazines and blogs about your industry. Look for sites that are trusted by others in your profession or field and subscribe to their feed so that you don’t miss anything important.
2) Stay up to date
The IT world is changing and rapidly evolving. If you’re not actively trying to keep up with it, chances are that within a few months, you’ll be behind. Staying on top of what’s happening in your industry makes it easier to spot opportunities, plus it allows you to start conversations in meetings or at events. Better yet: staying on top of tech news means better career opportunities. Case in point: Salesforce just released a new programming language that could help power enterprise-level cloud applications in years to come; and because its engineers are so savvy about tech, they were able to quickly create their own apps using it—and gain expertise that gives them an edge over other companies and competitors!
3) Help build your brand
If you’re a blogger or website owner, keeping up with what’s happening in technology is an essential part of maintaining your professional credibility. Each new major update to one of your core products can help you keep clients, drive traffic and grow your business. Being able to talk about specific updates—not just at a high level, but from a technical perspective—can make you more of an authority and command respect from readers. Regularly staying on top of the news can also open up opportunities for guest posts on other blogs, which is one of my favorite ways to find new clients.
4) Keep current in your field
Whether you work in tech or not, you probably know someone who does. In fact, if you’re reading my post, I have a hunch that there’s at least one friend of yours (or family member) working as an engineer or data scientist. The more you stay up-to-date on these technologies, strategies, and market trends, the better positioned you are to build strong relationships with colleagues and offer valuable feedback on new business initiatives. In addition to staying informed about technology news, you should also keep tabs on what’s happening in your field. For example, if you work for a retail company and want to learn about trends in e-commerce marketing, follow companies like Shopify and Google Analytics for their latest announcements. If you don’t already read them regularly, start following sites like TechCrunch or VentureBeat for their coverage of startups (and how they’re using technology). By doing so, you’ll get access to valuable information about how other companies are leveraging technology–information that can help you make strategic decisions for your own organization.
